FAQ
Most frequently asked questions and answers regarding Microneedling
Microneedling is a non-invasive and almost pain-free procedure where a pen-like device is used to poke very tiny needles through the skin to stimulate your own natural collagen production. The skin plumps and thickens in response to the stimulus, reducing the appearance of scars, stretch marks, and fine lines.
Upon arrival at your appointment, you will receive a full consultation discussing what your goals are after microneedling treatments. A topical numbing cream using lidocaine will be applied to the areas to be treated. The skin will be cleansed with an antiseptic. The microneedling device looks like a pen, but has disposable tips that contain anywhere from 12 to 36 very thin needles. When the pen is turned on, the microneedles will pulse in and out of the superficial layers of your skin. Most people do not experience pain, but may experience a vibration sensation. You may notice minor bruising after the procedure that is temporary. Expect some redness and bleeding which is most likely gone in less than 1 day.

Alternative procedures to help with the above listed conditions include other non-invasive treatments we also offer such as filler and botox. However, for general aging concerns and for patients that want “overall rejuvenation”, microneedling may produce superior results. Other procedures include lasers, which are usually more expensive and associated with slightly increased risks and downtime. Surgical procedures may also help with wrinkles and facial aging, but do not typically help skin texture or specific concerns like scars.
You may have noticed many non-physician spas and salons offering “microneedling” or even advertisements to purchase your own “microneedling” or “dermaroller”. Be advised the microneedling device we use is distributed to physicians only. This device penetrates the skin much deeper to produce more significant results. The physicians at Southern Vanity not only have many years of experience with microneedling, but even performed studies to validate its efficacy. We truly are the microneedling experts.
